    Quick Question

hard to describe, when doing a cross desolve or fade out for example, you make your cut and then at the fade transition, but the transition does not end (IE black screen or next clip) at the point where you cut, but begins at that point. This means that when the transition is played back you...

    Digital video courses

At the New York Film Academy we learned all the actual operation of the camera (menus, shooting modes, 24p, all that) in the camera classes, but most of the cinematography was learned in directing classes (shots, framing, lighting etc)

    Video Festivals

hi there, most short film festivals will let you submit films shot on video, usualy all they need is your film on a MiniDV tape, so go for it! Most people dont really get to use film untill they are working with someone elses money!

    no location release

interesting situation! i suppose you have two choices, yea tell the property owner that you already shot, or ask the owner for permission and then say a few weeks later that you diddnt need the scene after all but thanks very much for his time! just make sure he dosent see your final film!

    Cameras and Audio

my camera is a sony HVR-Z1P. It shoots HDV or DVCAM and comes with an attatchment that fits onto the inteligent shoe which gives you 2 xlr's. It also comes with a shotgun mic. I'd definitely recomend it, unless you want to shoot in low light, although it does have a night mode with an IR light.

    smoking and film/commercial production

I live in New Zealand, where very few people smoke, smoking is banned in all work places, even outside, so its not really a problem on film sets in NZ. I suppose thats what made me really notice it when i was shooting at Universal Studios about 6 months ago, everyone was smoking!, i kept looking...

    Have a budget...have a script...need some help

yea, i agree about renting a camera, for $4000 you can rent a really nice camera for long enough to make your film. I would segest shooting in HD if possable (HDV is probably the most cost effective). As for your "matrix look" this can be done really easily in post. Or you could do it in camera...

Does a student really need his/her own camera?

i've had my own camera for a while, one of the first mini-dv cams on the market, a panasonic. I managed to "aquire" it from my dads office and have had it ever since. Its been fine for everything i've been doing up til now. However, that camera recently broke so i had to go for a while without...
