where do i have to place security floodlights

I bought 2 security floodlights (500w) and a china lantern for soft light with 100w bulb. I really need to know where to place the floodlights, at what distance, and the china lantern too. I want to know how can i make the background dark and only the subject lit. Hope you help me!

I apologize for the delay in responding, and thank you for posting. To keep the background dark, light your subject from the side and keep them far from the background wall, so the light falls off before reaching it. Place a floodlight at about 45 degrees to the side as your key light, with diffusion or a bounce to soften it.

Use the china lantern close to the subject as a soft fill or key. Security lights get very hot, so keep them away from anything flammable and use them safely. Our Lighting & Grip forum is a great place to share your results.
