I apologize for the delay in responding, and thank you for posting. You can fake lightning on set without visual effects. Aim a strong light through the window and flash it quickly by switching it on and off or waving a flag across it; irregular bursts of two or three flashes look most natural. A slightly cool color (daylight or a touch of blue gel) sells the effect, and many affordable LED panels now have a built-in lightning mode. Add the thunder in sound design a second or two after the flash. Try a test and share the result!
