free screenwriting software

what free screen writing software is there available? what is the best. I guess the best is just using word.

Update, November 2026
Good free and low-cost screenwriting options today include WriterDuet's free tier, Celtx, Trelby and the free trial of Fade In, which is also affordable to buy. Final Draft remains the industry standard. Using a word processor is possible, but dedicated software handles formatting automatically so you can focus on the story.
