Movie Franchise

Great question. The franchises that last usually start with a world bigger than one story: rules, places and side characters audiences want to come back to. They also have a central character whose wants can renew film after film. The first film has to work completely on its own, too. Sequels come from audiences asking for more, not from setting them up. What franchise do you think got it most right? Screenwriters here, I'd love your take.
