Does anyone know where the name originated?

Update, November 2026
The term gaffer is often linked to the long hook, or gaff, used to adjust lights on early stages. Today the gaffer is the chief lighting technician, working with the DP to design and execute the lighting plan.

From the word "gaff" which in British English means metal pole used in theatre to adjust the stage lights.

The Gaffer is very important for the production of a movie because lights are what make the clarity of the image good or not. If the subjects are under exposed or over exposed the quality of the film will be affected
