'Bad Taste'

Having just watched this movie (Peter Jackson's first low-budget feature, shot over four years for very little money) for the first time in quite a while, I thought it was worth pointing out for anyone who wants to do effects with very little money and hasn't seen this one. It was interesting going through the movie figuring out how they'd done the effects, which are often quite convincing for a movie of its budget.

The 'time travel by turning lights on and off' sequence at the end of 'The Frighteners' is another great Peter Jackson trick if you've missed that one too... that really impressed me with how good it looked and how easily it was done.

I apologize for the delay in responding, and thank you for posting. Bad Taste is a great pick for anyone doing effects on a tiny budget. Peter Jackson made it with friends on weekends over several years, and figuring out how each effect was done is a fantastic lesson in practical filmmaking.

His career is the best proof that resourcefulness counts: the same creative problem-solving later carried into much bigger films. What low-budget effects tricks have you used in your own films? Share them in our VFX, Animation and Motion forum.
