Are any colleges teaching film syncing? What, if anything, is being taught about editing on film?

Nothing that I know of, since it's not done anymore. You can find flatbeds as display pieces at select post houses and I'm sure you can grab one for little to nuthin' on ebay if you wanna tinker. Today, the movies still shot on film are telecined to digital for post. Fewer and fewer films are shot on film at all and it's just a matter of time until that expense is skipped all together.

That said, 95% of films you see in the theater are projected on film. Back in 2000 they said film was doomed, and here we are today. Just something to consider.

That's just for distribution purposes as so much money is tied up in old school projection.
"They" who say film is doomed should just say it was a great format and will be replaced. Will it happen overnight? If it gives you an indication, the first FCC mandate for the switch to HD was Jan 1, 2000.
Evolution takes a while. We always have to wait for the slackers.
