From what I've heard from people who've tried that route, it's difficult without a track record. If all you have is a script and a showreel, the best you're likely to get is some feedback from distributors as to whether it's the kind of movie they might want to pick up when it's finished... with no guarantee that they will.
Perhaps the best way to look at it is this: would you promise to buy a movie that hasn't been shot yet, from a first-time director with an inexperienced crew?
