GoPro just announced something that is worth paying attention to. The Mission 1 Series dropped in April and the one that caught my eye is the Mission 1 Pro ILS. ILS stands for Interchangeable Lens System, and what makes it unusual is that it puts a Micro Four Thirds lens mount on a 1-inch sensor body. That is a combination nobody expected from GoPro and it changes what this camera can do compared to anything they have made before.
All three cameras in the Mission 1 lineup share the same new 50MP 1-inch sensor and GoPro's new GP3 processor, and they are calling it the world's smallest, lightest, and most rugged 8K and 4K Open Gate cinema camera. The fixed lens versions are the Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro. The ILS is the one for filmmakers who want to actually control their glass and bring a more cinematic approach to what GoPro has always done well, which is putting a camera anywhere.
The Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro go on sale May 28, 2026 and the Mission 1 Pro ILS is coming in Q3 2026. GoPro is not charging a premium for the interchangeable lens version, pricing it at $699, the same as the fixed lens Pro, which is aggressive for what it is.
