I am wondering how many years a DVD stored at room temprature will last? And, what is the most archival medium today?
Update, November 2026
Recordable DVDs vary widely. Burned discs can last years or fail much sooner depending on dye quality, storage and handling. For archiving today, the best practice is the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two different types of media, with one copy offsite. Hard drives, LTO tape for larger archives, and cloud backup are the common choices. Check and migrate your archive every few years.
