Obtaining rights to popular music

Hey, Im trying to find a way to get rights to some fairly popular music for a film. I know your thinking find different music, but these specific songs are very important. The record company is Zumba now but i cant find a way in.

Did you try calling and writing them? For a popular song you usually need two licenses: a sync license from the music publisher for the composition, and a master use license from the record label for the recording. You can look up the publisher in the ASCAP, BMI or SESAC repertory searches, and ask about festival-only rates, which are often lower for student films.

Try working through the management of one of their artists or ASCAP/BMI/SESAC; you'll eventually be dealing with them all anyway.

If this is a union play, you need to contact BMI and ASCAP and all the other owners of the rights - it is expensive, time consuming and a drag

most smaller theaters just cross their fingers and jump.

some of the best places to go for this is -
