On December 24, 2003, the very first post went up on these forums: a workshop announcement for "Introduction to Digital Editing / Post Production / Final Cut Pro" from Third World Newsreel in New York. A few weeks later, on January 31, 2004, doowopkid became our very first member.

By the end of 2004, 110 filmmakers had joined and written 2,642 posts in 558 discussions. Cinematography and the General Forum were the busiest, followed by Post-Production & Editing and Screenwriting. Some of those first questions are still among our most-read threads today: Free Storyboard software, How Long Should a Script Be for a Short Film?, What does beat mean in a script, Getting A-list actors to star in independent films and Favorite Movies for Cinematography.

A few of our firsts:
  • doowopkid: our first member (January 31, 2004)
  • violet: our second member, who joined in February 2004 and started some of our first friendly conversations
  • dixie: asked one of the very first questions, "how do I get started?" It's still the question every filmmaker asks.
  • Boone: started one of the first discussions, "ND Filters" (February 25, 2004)
Thank you to the founding members who gave so much of their time and knowledge: jodymichelle (1,645 posts), David Mullen ASC (750 posts, answering cinematography questions for years), MarkG (536), Lazlo (269), laurent.a (206), Jared Isham (180), DannyG (109), mercuryzap, Zenmaster4, Zagorchinov, The Company, and every one of the 110.

You'll now see a gold Founding Member badge next to their names on every post they wrote.

Were you here in 2003 or 2004? Say hello below. We'd love to hear what you're making now. And if you're new, start where they did: introduce yourself and ask your first question.
