Reality Shows for Auditions?

so i am watchin the new show on MTV Legally Blonde The Musical. These girls are trying out for the role of Emme Woods and its all shot and aired infront of the world. is that really a good idea? Are these girls really the best they could find for a broadway show? or do you think the fact that its a reality show discouraged REAL actresses from trying out?
